One year ago in early 2011 began my third year at the Moulin – looking back at it (I’m writing in January 2012) – it was a bit of a killer ! – maybe I just tried to do too much – but besides a few pulled muscles which still bother me I seem to be fully recovered.

Let me try and list some of what happened – I became a host for WWOOF and this brought some fabulous people to stay over the summer and to provide some serious help and great company. Even better, several new friends from the year before came back.

By now the stream is largely cleared – and some great views down the canyon have resulted – a new rock dam is in place – (the third one so far – first one moved – second one destroyed by a torrent after a heavy storm!) – and a new 25 metre pond has been created – now occupied by a family of wild Mallard ducks. The field kitchen is well underway – it has a stone barbecue and a big double sink, cooking area, picnic table etc. – Then next step for that is a roof and the connecting up of a water supply, some electricity and wi-fi – all coming from the house. The completion of this will make a big improvement for future guests – it will provide a great base and hanging-out space – and is the next priority.

The yurt platform is also well underway and awaiting its timber deck – new trees are planted – and all the existing ones are cleared of ivy and in good condition. The log “staircase” has been strengthened and is awaiting some rope-work to provide a safe handrail.
At the house a new stone porch is nearly complete, a new stone log-store finished and roofed – and a covered corridor built onto the front of the guest house. The main house now has a new bathroom for the exclusive use of guests – a flushing toilet and hot shower – what luxury – and it also has a new central heating system – including a big log stove and solar hot water generation – this has been a huge and unplanned expense but it is almost complete and ……. yes …..
